How do you calculate the fees for .eth registration?

When you submit a registration you specify the bid amount that you would like to place.  There are then two fees which are added to this amount, a fixed service fee of .005ETH, which we charge, and a variable "gas cost" which is charged by the Ethereum network for the transaction.  It is variable dependent on how busy the Ethereum network is.
